Shane Lowry leads the way coming into the third round of The 152nd Open after scoring 69 just before the truly brutal conditions on day two.

Englishman Daniel Brown was the surprise package on day one, ending his first day at a major with a joint lead alongside Shane Lowry, but the Irishman powered through to gain another two strokes and end the day top of the pile.

Those two are joined near the top of the leaderboard by the impressive Justin Rose, who calmly navigated the challenging conditions to score 68 and keep himself in with a shout at five under heading into the weekend. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm are among the chasing pack.

Powerful winds brought bad luck for some though, as Tiger Woods equalled his worst two-round score at a major, and Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau both failed to make the cut.

The Open 2024: Latest scores

MacIntyre’s approach on the ninth overruns the pin and lands on the far edge of the first cut. Very unlikely that he gains a shot here – and his birdie putt lands wide, but he’ll tap in for par.

On 12, Im chips onto the green and it lands kindly, presenting another birdie chance. It lips out though, and he stays one-over for now! So close.

Thomas goes inches wide with the putt for a birdie on the first, and he’ll begin the day with par.

Adam Scott sinks a birdie to make +1.

Fitzpatrick misses par on the ninth and he’ll go into the back nine at six-over. Not happening for him today.

On the eighth, MacIntyre has yet another birdie opportunity, but it skims the hole! So unlucky. His tee shot on ninth is good though, coming up level with the fairway bunkers.

On 11, Im and playing partner Sharma both have a birdie chance once more, but neither can sink it.

Harman could only make par on the first hole but he’s got a birdie chance on the second…

Justin Thomas will be teeing off any moment now as he looks to improve on a torrid second day that took him from -3 to +4.

Rickie Fowler has his first birdie of the day, and he moves to +5. Im is looking for his sixth birdie of the day, but his putt is inches too short and he’ll stay on +1.

Another early birdie, this one for Adam Scott, and he moves to +2.

Defending champion Harman tees off for the day, starting with a shot that goes plum down the middle of the fairway.

Up on the Railway 11th, Homa tees off and avoids the tracks, guiding it down the middle.

MacIntyre makes the green in regulation on the seventh, and he has the birdie chance, but it’s a long one and it goes wide. He’ll stay on +3.

MacIntyre plays a brilliant chip to within a few inches of the pin to set himself up for a birdie on the sixth. He takes his chance and moves to +3.

Fitzpatrick’s birdie chance goes amiss after a misjudged left-to-right, but he’ll make par on the eighth.

Im continues his enjoyable morning with a fifth birdie of the day, taking him to +1 – and perhaps into contention, if he continues in this vein.

Phil Mickelson starts his day with a bogey on the first, and he goes to +6.

On seven, Fitzpatrick’s approach is good and sets him up for a birdie chance, while on nine, Homa’s birdie putt lips out so he’ll stay on +4.

Max Homa has birdied again for two-under on his first seven holes, and he moves to +4. He makes par on the eighth too.

MacIntyre hits the rough with his second shot on the par-five fourth, but he should make the green in regulation and save par. He tries the bump and run in an attempt for grab the birdie, but it doesn’t come off.

Im has grabbed another birdie – his fourth so far in the front nine – so he’s at +2.

The conditions are kinder this morning than they’ve been on the previous couple of days, with wind speeds set to stay a lot lower than they have been. Direction could throw a spanner in the works though.

Sungjae Im has made his third birdie now, so he moves to +3. Not a lot more to report in terms of improvements, as Fitzpatrick and Max Homa stay on +5 and MacIntyre stays at +4. Matt Wallace is also on +4 through four.

Below is Rob MacIntyre’s birdie to start the day.

Biridies are flying in all over the course now but remember, the first six holes are probably the most gettable at Troon. Bob MacIntyre and Matt Fitzpatrick have both found a birdie early on, while Sungjae Im has joined Shubankar Sharma a +4 with a pair of birdies

The first players are out on the course, these are the men who only just made the cut yesterday, with pairs heading out in reverse order of leaderboard position.

We showed you Max Homa’s birdie on the 18th yesterday to sneak inside the cut line and he’s picked up where he left off with a spanking drive down the 1st, a short wedge and a kick-in birdie. That sees him climb to +5.

India’s Shubankar Sharma is the other man going well right now as he has birdied the first two holes to go from +6 to +4 in the blink of an eye. It will be interesting to see how these early starters get on to give us an idea of how the course is playing ahead of the leaders going out later.
