TOKYO, Oct 9 (Reuters) – Japanese Commerce Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura mentioned on Sunday that the Sakhalin 1 oil and fuel mission in Russia is essential for Tokyo to make sure its diversified crude oil procurement.

The remark got here after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Friday that establishes a brand new operator for the mission in Russia’s Far East.

Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) holds a 30% operator stake in Sakhalin-1, with Russian firm Rosneft (ROSN.MM), India’s ONGC Videsh (ONVI.NS) and Japan’s SODECO as companions.

Requested if Japan intends to maintain its stake, Nishimura mentioned, “From the standpoint of diversifying Japan’s crude oil import, that is a vital mission.”
